INVESTIGACIONES AL LÍMITE / Una curadoría de colaboraciones experimentales
#xcol experimental collaborations

How art performs society: gifts, relations, and exchanges

Thursday, 4 June from 5-6.30pm

Dr Roger Sansi (Goldsmiths, London) in conversation with Prof Marilyn Strathern (emer. Professor of Social Anthropology, Cambridge)

Chaired by Jonas Tinius (Co-Convenor, Cambridge Interdisciplinary Performance Network)

Roger Sansi is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Senior Researcher at the Universitat de Barcelona. He has worked on Afro-brazilian Art (Fetishes and Monuments 2007, Berghahn), fetishism and sorcery (Sorcery in the Black Atlantic 2011, U. of Chicago Press), money (Economies of Relation: Money and Personalism in the Lusophone World, 2013, Tagus press) and more recently on contemporary art and politics in Spain. His recent monograph, Art, anthropology and the Gift (Bloomsbury, 2014) has been described by George Marcus as “the most comprehensive assessment yet of the considerable history, present, and hoped for future relationship between ethnographic and artistic practices.”

Marilyn Strathern DBE, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology, Cambridge, and former Mistress of Girton College, has recently been made Life President of the Association of Social Anthropologists; she is an Honorary fellow of Trinity College. Her interests have been divided between Melanesian and British ethnography. She is probably most well known for The gender of the gift (1988), a critique of anthropological theories of society and gender relations applied to Melanesia, which she pairs with After nature (1992), a comment on the cultural revolution at home. Projects over the last twenty years are reflected in publications on reproductive technologies, and intellectual and cultural property rights, while ‘critique of good practice’ has been the umbrella under which she has written about audit, accountability and interdisciplinarity.

All are welcome

Why the world needs anthropologists

BURNING ISSUES OF OUR HOT PLANET

Our planet is becoming increasingly hot. We are facing climate change, social turmoil on local and global scales, and changing political and economic systems. This international symposium will explore anthropology’s applied aspects and potential benefits for society, economy, and the environment. Our keynote speakers will present the ways in which anthropologists can affect and improve the current circumstances often caused by human recklessness, and inspire us to join them on their missions.

Stay tuned for details – registration opens in the following weeks!

Consejos para la búsqueda de información

http://manualdelinvestigador.blogspot.com.es/2015/05/consejos-para-la-busqueda-de-informacion.html

III. Against the Anthropocene

http://blog.fotomuseum.ch/2015/05/iii-against-the-anthropocene/

On May 16th, 2015, the “Paddle in Seattle” demo unleashed its kayak flotilla, a mass direct action against Shell’s Arctic-bound Polar Pioneer drilling rig temporarily stationed in the west coast city’s port. Word and images of the “S(h)ell no!” protest spread widely online, accompanying reports in indie media and some mainstream press, distributed by environmentalist and Indigenous movements, adding momentum to the popular challenge to extreme extractivism in the far North.

THE UNBEARABLE DAINTINESS OF WOMEN WHO EAT WITH MEN

http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2015/05/26/the-unbearable-daintiness-of-women-who-eat-with-men/

20150526_105320A substantial body of literature suggests that women change what they eat when they eat with men. Specifically, women opt for smaller amounts and lower-calorie foods associated with femininity. So, some scholars argue that women change what they eat to appear more feminine when dining with male companions.

For my senior thesis, I explored whether women change the way they eat  alongside what they eat when dining with a male vs. female companion. To examine this phenomenon, I conducted 42 hours of non-participant observation in two four-star American restaurants in a large west coast city in the United States. I observed the eating behaviors of 76 Euro-American women (37 dining with a male companion and 39 dining with a female companion) aged approximately 18 to 40 to identify differences in their eating behaviors.
