Yes, You Can: Being an Academic and a Mother

http://allegralaboratory.net/yes-you-can-being-an-academic-and-a-mother/

Mother and Child by Carol Von Canon

Can one be an academic and a mother? Of course. Of course you can, and yet, this question is a common one. It is one female graduate students ask, and it is one female faculty ask. We ask it because the answer is not clear. We ask it also because the answer is shifting.

For decades conventional wisdom about having a baby in academia was that this would slow down, if not end, a woman’s career. Women who were pregnant were presumed to not be as ‘serious’ as men. What we now say is that this is no longer (entirely) the case. Things have changed. Universities have become more family friendly. Anthropology has changed. More women are now receiving PhD degrees in anthropology than men. The sheer presence of more women in the discipline compels change in both sentiments and structures, but not overnight, and not without struggle.

Moving Without a Body – Digital Philosophy and Choreographic Thought

http://adancehistory.blogspot.it/2015/05/moving-without-body-digital-philosophy.html

Stamatia Portanova, Moving Without a Body – Digital Philosophy and ChoreographicThoughts, Cambridge, MIT Press, 2013.
Odette from Swan Lake is one of the most famous ballet roles in dance history and is paramount of this art. The unusual port de bras, the pondered gestures, the finitude of pointwork. Dance is about moving bodies, but what if dance and movement could be re-thought in their absence? What if movement took a life of its own and stepped away from the muscles and bones that usually create it? Odette could be captured by a camera and her movement remastered through digital technology. What would the result be? Her body parts could be altered, the pace of her solo transformed and the spatio-temporal sequence of her phrase changed.

Before the digital revolution, there have been attempts to conceive of movement in the absence of bodies. One fascinating example is the ballet Feu d’artfice (1917), set by Giacomo Balla, music by Igor Stravinsky, a ballet that consisted of geometric solids of different colours animated by forty-nine polychromous lights, which were being turned on and off as the music score proceeded. No dancers at all, the kinetic element being created by the interplay between lights and solids. As a Futurist artist, Balla was interested in exploring the relationship between artificial landscapes and speed, and this ballet was a particularly experimental example.

With the digital revolution, the idea of movement without a body has become a multifaceted and changing reality and Stamatia Portanova’s book is an example of how this question can be addressed from a philosophical point of view. It is a challenging and significant work at the same time. Challenging, because it destabilizes, at times even in the writing style, the reader accustomed to think of dance as an embodied art form, and significant, because sometimes we need to move and, in this case, re-move the given for granted aspects of dance to see what is there to be further discovered. Drawing from the theories of scholars like Gilles Deleuze and Alfred North Whitehead, as well as the choreographic work of William Forsythe and Merce Cunningham among others, Portanova asks its readers to think and envision movement according to different parameters such as numbers and the idea of the cut. In other words, “the aim is to give to conceptual reflection another capacity: not as an in-depth excavation of subjective, bodily, human experience, but as a superficial abstraction of concepts beyond subjects, humans, and even (human or technological) bodies”.  (gehiago…)

Opting Out of Motherhood

http://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/features/a10040/opting-out-of-motherhood-0315/?src=longreads

Why I decided not to have kids.

I’ve never wanted children, but I’ve always had names picked out for them anyway. Some might say that’s a sign that I live in some sad state of unconscious regret now that, having freshly turned 45, I haven’t had them. But it mostly just means there are pets I’ve wanted to call Lucy and Thomas but didn’t because I was irrationally inclined to save those names on the off chance they might be put to human use one day. I say irrationally because this is basically tantamount to holding on to a pair of ankle harnesses in case I suddenly want to go bungee jumping—something that ranks about 500,000th on my bucket list. But that’s how deeply the motherhood mandate is imprinted in women’s brains. We try to talk ourselves into it. Sometimes we even let others talk us into it. Even those of us who aren’t programmed for it are prone to try to overwrite our code. (gehiago…)

Europa-Argentina: Reflexiones sobre algunos hitos del proceso de institucionalización de la maternidad.

http://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/NOMA/article/view/42568

https://secure.avaaz.org/es/petition/Ayuntamiento_de_Bilbao_Area_de_Igualdad_Bilboko_Udala_Berdintasun_saila_CASA_DE_MUJERES_Y_DISIDENTES_DE_GENERO_EN_BILBAO/?sdbZrjb

Bilboko talde feministak gara eta… Bilbo Feminista orain nahi dugu! Bilboko Mugimendu Feministak 40 urte baino gehiago borrokan diharduen arren, Bilbon ez daukagu ez Emakumeen Etxerik, ezta Jabekuntza Eskolarik; eta berdintasun arlorako aurrekontu lotsagarriak izaten jarraitzen dugu, genero politikarik eta lerro estrategikorik gabe. Gainera, Udalak Mugimendu Feministarekin kontsultatu eta lotu barik egiten ditu Berdintasun Planak. Gure udalaren berdintasun politiken egoera beste herrialde bietako hiriburuetakoekin eta beste herri batzuetakoekin konparatzen badugu, argi ikusten da berdintasuna ez dela Bilboko Udalaren apustu estrategikoa. Horregatik EKINTZETARA PASATZEKO garaia dela uste dugu. Udalak ez ditu berdintasun arloko eskakizunak eta premiak betetzen eta horregatik Bilboko Mugimendu Feministak planto egin eta BILBO FEMINISTA eskatzen dugu. HAUXE ESKATZEN DUGU:
Emakumeen Etxea. Lotsagarria da Bilbo bezalako hiri batean Emakumeen Etxerik ez izatea, biztanle gutxiagoko hiriek eduki baitituzte. Mugimendu feministaren berezko lekua nahi dugu, parte-hartze, elkartasun eta onarpenerako topalekua, kontzientzia hartze eta taldeen artikulaziorako espazioa.
Emakumeen Dokumentazio Zentroa modu eraginkorrean laguntzea, iraunkorra izan dadin eta eskaintzen dituen zerbitzuen baldintzak hobeak izan daitezen.
Heziketa Feministako Eskola. Euskal Herriko udal ugaritan Jabekuntza Eskolak daude. Bilbon ere Jabekuntza Eskola nahi dugu, Bilboko herritarrei heziketa feminista eskainiko diena, parte-hartze sozio-politikoa sustatze aldera.
– Bilboko emakumeen beharrei erantzungo dien aurrekontua, eta batez ere, diru-laguntza duinak emakume talde eta talde feministentzat. Udalari eskatzen diogu berdintasuna lortzeko ekintzetarako duela 5 urte bideratzen zuen aurrekontua berriro ere eskaintzea.
– Bilbon, indarkeria sexista prebenitzeko plan orokorra behar da, egiturazko arazo honi erantzuna emateko, behar den moduan prebentzioa lantzeko eta indarkeria kasu desberdinen aurrean beharrezko diren baliabide guztiak eskaini eta garatzeko. Emakumeen mugimenduari eta oro har mugimendu sozialei zuen babesa erakusteko eskatzen dizuegu, manifestu honi atxikimendua adierazita eta kanpainaren barruan burutuko ditugun ekintzetan parte hartuta. Bilboko emakumeei dei egiten diegu gure proposamen eta aldarrikapenetara bildu daitezen.
